Director
Dr. Sophie Lebel, C. Psych
Dr. Sophie Lebel is a clinical health psychologist and Full Professor at uOttawa with a Ph.D. from Université de Montréal, Québec. She joined the University of Ottawa Faculty in July 2007 after completing a post-doctoral fellowship at the Princess Margaret Cancer Center in Toronto, Ontario.
Her research interests focus on cancer survivors and their families, with a focus on developing and testing questionnaires, models, and interventions for fear of cancer recurrence, sexuality, fatigue, stigma, and dyadic adjustment.
Dr. Lebel is currently supervising the Doctoral dissertations of Alanna Chu, Lauriane Giguère, Ghizlène Sehabi, Malick Ouattara, and Annstein Bedeau.

Brooke Russell, PhD

Brooke Russell is a clinical psychologist and postdoctoral fellow at the University of Ottawa. She received her PhD in clinical psychology from the University of Calgary in 2024. Her research interests focus on fear of cancer recurrence and other psychosocial outcomes for survivors of childhood cancer. She is currently working on adapting the Fear of Cancer Recurrence Therapy (FORT) intervention for adolescent and early young adult survivors of childhood cancer. Her clinical interests are in clinical, health, and rehabilitation psychology and she has a small clinical practice seeing children, teens, and young adults with cancer.

Alanna Chu, MPH

Alanna Chu is a doctoral candidate in the Clinical Psychology program at the University of Ottawa. Her research interests are in the experiences of fear of cancer progression and supportive care needs of patients with advanced and metastatic lung cancer receiving an immunotherapy or targeted therapy. Her clinical interests are in clinical, health and rehabilitation psychology. She received her Master of Public Health in Epidemiology with a collaborative specialization in addictions from the University of Toronto in 2019 and her Bachelor of Arts in Psychology from Queen’s University.

Lauriane Giguère

Lauriane Giguère is a doctoral candidate in the Clinical Psychology program at the University of Ottawa. Her research interests focus on clinical fear of cancer recurrence, including the development of measures and interventions for fear of cancer recurrence as well as the impact of fear of cancer recurrence on caregivers of cancer patients or survivors.

Ghizlène Sehabi

Ghizlene is a third year PhD student in clinical psychology. Ghizlene strives to provide culturally sensitive care to diverse populations. Ghizlene's research interests include exploring the cancer experience within minority ethnic communities, particularly focusing on the fear of cancer recurrence.

Annstein Bedeau

Annstein is a first-year PhD student in clinical psychology. Her research interests are healthcare disparities and equitable access to psycho-oncological care for Black and other racialized communities. Annstein aims to strengthen supportive care pathways and advance equity-focused improvements to promote psychological well-being throughout the cancer care journey.

Celeste Holy
Research Coordinator

Celeste is a Research Coordinator for the Psychosocial Oncology Lab and is currently overseeing the adaptation of FORT for parents of survivors of childhood cancer (Parent FORT). She is interested in the impact of interventions targeting the psychological needs of children and their caregivers.
Celeste is currently a graduate student in the MA Counselling program at the University of Ottawa.

Anne Leslie
Research Coordinator

Anne holds an Honours Interdisciplinary Health Sciences undergraduate degree from the University of Ottawa, as well as an Advanced Diploma in Medical Radiation Technology from Algonquin College. In addition to working as a research assistant on the Living With Lung Cancer study, Anne has worked in mammography as a diagnostic imaging technologist at The Ottawa Hospital. Anne has a keen interest in interdisciplinary approaches to healthcare, and how facilitating continuity of care can lead to improved patient outcomes.

Artina Madani
Research Coordinator

Artina holds an Honours Bachelor of Interdisciplinary Health Sciences with a minor in Psychology from the University of Ottawa. She is currently working with Dr. Brooke Russell on the FORT project, focusing on its implementation in pediatrics. Artina is deeply interested in the intersection of psychology and medicine, particularly in how integrated approaches can improve both mental and physical health outcomes for patients.

Yasmine is a medical student at the University of Ottawa.
Psychiatry being one of her areas of interest, she is actively working in the lab to enhance her skills in health psychology and expand her knowledge in interdisciplinary care.

America Prudent is a volunteer and 4th year student in Psychology B.A at the University of Ottawa. She's currently working on the Fear of Recurrence Therapy (FORT) project and on the impact of fear of recurrence on caregivers. She will graduate with an Honours B.A. in Psychology in 2026.

Ruth Kwizera
Ruth is a 4th year student and is completing her Honours thesis in the PSO lab. She is involved in a study exploring the psychosocial needs of Black Canadian women affected by cancer.
Ruth is passionate about the psychosocial impacts of cancer-related adversities in diverse communities. She plans to pursue graduate studies in Clinical Psychology.

Maya Marris
Maya Marris is a second-year student in the Master of Health Sciences in Occupational Therapy at the University of Ottawa and a volunteer in the PSO lab. Her master’s memoire explores how housing instability influences the daily lives and occupational participation of individuals living with traumatic brain injury.
Maya is interested in the psychosocial aspects of health as well as improving access to information and care for patients and caregivers. She hopes to pursue doctoral studies in Clinical Psychology.
